LightMare - B1.2
Squad: Sleep
Partners: Doortje Markovic, Ruben Meeuwsen, Andrea Núñez Velasco
Sleep was the topic of my first project of Industrial Design. I chose the squad, because sleep is something we all need to function properly. As a group, we were very interested in nightmares, because it is something that keeps you away from a good rest. This is not only annoying, but can be very stressful as well. Another thing is that you do not like going to bed anymore, afraid of what is to come. For this reason we created LightMare.
LightMare is a device to help people going to sleep relaxed without bothering about having nightmares. It is designed to be used in a private home setting, but can be brought with the user. The concept of LightMare is based on the image rehearsel therapy that is used by psychiatrists all over the world to treat phobias and PTSD. Whenever someone has a nightmare, he puts keywords into LightMare. He or she will receive immediate feedback and positive stories and images to replace the bad ones of the dreams.
Learning Points:
A first project is mainly learning a lot about how to tackle problem statements and how to come up with a design for it. It is searching for a balanced cooperation of team members and that can be difficult at times. On top of that, all of the team members are new to the field and have to develop their expertise areas. However, every member has some skills in some of the fields and that is how you learn from each other. In the beginning I felt like we were sticking to the parts we were familiar to. However, towards the end we were more able to also try the different things and let everyone grow in all the competence areas.
Doing a project around the topic of sleep was a first step towards my vision. Sleep is an important factor for well-being and health of people. It is the time for your body to recharge and energize for the next day. If that is not going properly, you're not able to get the best out of yourself.
